Tankless Water Heater Descaling in Scottsdale

October 12, 2026 8 min read

Short answer: Scottsdale homes should have their tankless water heater descaled once a year, and every 6 months if you don't have a water softener. Our water runs about 17–22 grains per gallon, so scale builds up fast inside the heat exchanger. A professional descale in Scottsdale typically costs $150–$250 in 2026 and takes 60–90 minutes. Skipping it leads to error codes, uneven temperatures and, eventually, a heat exchanger repair that can cost more than the original install.

Written by Casey Dominick, licensed Arizona plumber (ROC #350819). We descale Navien, Rinnai, Noritz, Rheem and Takagi units across Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Phoenix and Fountain Hills. Call (623) 323-4538 for a flat-rate descale.

Key takeaways

  • How often: once a year with a softener, every 6 months without one, and every 3–4 months for heavy use with untreated water.
  • Cost: $150–$250 for a professional descale in Scottsdale (2026). Add $25–$60 if isolation valves need to be installed or replaced.
  • Time: about 60–90 minutes, including flushing, cleaning the inlet filter and checking for error codes.
  • Warning signs: fluctuating temperatures, lower hot water flow, a scale code like Navien "E-109," Rinnai "LC" or a lime warning.
  • A softener cuts scale but doesn't remove the need to descale. It stretches the schedule instead.

What descaling actually does

A tankless heater heats water as it passes through a narrow heat exchanger. In Scottsdale's hard water, calcium and magnesium come out of the water as it heats and stick to those passages as scale. Descaling pumps a mild acid solution (usually food-grade white vinegar or a commercial descaler) through the heat exchanger for about 45–60 minutes to dissolve that buildup.

This is different from flushing a tank water heater. A tank collects loose sediment on the bottom, and you drain it out. A tankless unit builds hard scale on hot metal surfaces, so it needs a solution that dissolves it. For tank heaters, see is water heater flushing necessary?.

Why Scottsdale tankless units scale so fast

  • Very hard water. Scottsdale water is commonly 17–22 grains per gallon (about 290–375 ppm). Manufacturers often call anything above 7 grains "hard" and ask for more frequent maintenance.
  • High outlet temperatures. Scale forms faster at higher temperatures. Setting the unit to 120°F instead of 130–140°F slows buildup.
  • Hot ground water in summer. Water entering the house in July can be 85–95°F, so the burner fires in short bursts. That doesn't stop scale, which still forms on the hottest metal.
  • Heavy use. Big families, soaking tubs and recirculation loops move more water through the unit, and more water means more minerals.

How often to descale a tankless water heater in Scottsdale

Your setup Recommended descaling
Whole-house water softener, normal use Every 12 months
Salt-free conditioner (TAC) Every 9–12 months
No water treatment, 1–3 people Every 6 months
No water treatment, 4+ people or recirculation Every 3–4 months
Vacation or snowbird home Every 12 months, plus a check when you return

Check your owner's manual too. Some warranties require proof of regular descaling in hard water, and scale damage is often not covered.

Signs your tankless water heater needs descaling

  1. Hot water swings between hot and lukewarm during a shower.
  2. Less hot water flow at the tap than when the unit was new.
  3. Scale or maintenance error codes. Navien may show E-109 or a scale warning, Rinnai shows LC with a number, and Noritz and Rheem have their own lime-scale codes. Look up your model's code before you assume the worst.
  4. The unit shuts off during long showers or when two fixtures run at once.
  5. Rattling, banging or a whistling sound from the heater.
  6. Higher gas or electric bills with no change in use.

Professional tankless descaling: what we do

  1. Shut off power and gas and close the isolation valves on the hot and cold lines.
  2. Connect a pump and hoses to the service ports on the valves.
  3. Circulate descaling solution through the heat exchanger for 45–60 minutes.
  4. Flush with clean water until the solution is gone.
  5. Clean the inlet water filter screen, which often clogs with debris.
  6. Check the burner, venting, condensate drain and error history.
  7. Restore service and test temperature and flow at a fixture.

2026 tankless descaling cost in Scottsdale

Service Typical cost
Standard descale and inlet filter cleaning $150 – $250
Descale plus install of missing isolation valves $450 – $650
Descale on a unit with built-in recirculation pump $175 – $275
Heat exchanger replacement after scale damage $900 – $1,800+

Every visit gets a flat written quote before we start. If your unit was installed without isolation valves, we strongly recommend adding them. Without them, every descale takes longer and costs more.

Can you descale a tankless water heater yourself?

Yes, if your unit has isolation valves and you're comfortable with gas appliances. You'll need a small submersible pump, two washing machine hoses, a 5-gallon bucket and 3–4 gallons of white vinegar or a manufacturer-approved descaler.

Cautions:

  • Always shut off power and gas first.
  • Never use harsh acids like muriatic acid. They can damage the heat exchanger.
  • Clean the inlet filter. A clogged screen can trigger errors even after a good descale.
  • If you see an error code that doesn't clear afterward, or water leaking from the unit, stop and call a plumber.

How to make descaling less frequent

  • Install a water softener sized for your household. See water softener installation and what size water softener do I need?.
  • Lower the temperature to 120°F unless you need it hotter.
  • Add isolation valves so maintenance is fast and cheap.
  • Use your recirculation pump on a timer or on demand instead of running it all day.

When descaling isn't enough

If your unit is over 15 years old, has had repeated scale damage, or shows a heat exchanger leak, replacing it may cost less over time than repeated repairs. Compare options in our tankless vs tank cost breakdown, or see our tankless water heater installation page.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I descale my tankless water heater in Scottsdale? Once a year if you have a water softener, and every 6 months without one. Homes with heavy use and untreated water may need it every 3–4 months because Scottsdale water is very hard.

How much does tankless water heater descaling cost in Scottsdale? Most professional descales cost $150–$250 in 2026, including cleaning the inlet filter. Adding missing isolation valves brings the total to about $450–$650.

How long does it take to descale a tankless water heater? About 60–90 minutes for a professional descale, including setup, 45–60 minutes of circulating the solution, flushing and testing.

What happens if I never descale my tankless water heater? Scale narrows the heat exchanger, which causes temperature swings, low flow, error codes and shutdowns. Over time it can crack or overheat the heat exchanger, which often costs $900 or more to replace.

Can I use vinegar to descale a tankless water heater? Yes. Food-grade white vinegar works for most units, but check your owner's manual. Some manufacturers recommend their own descaling solution.

Do I still need to descale if I have a water softener? Yes, but less often. A softener removes most hardness, so once a year is usually enough. It's still smart to clean the inlet filter and check for error codes.

Does descaling void my tankless water heater warranty? No. Regular descaling helps protect your warranty. Many manufacturers don't cover scale damage in hard-water areas if the unit wasn't maintained.
