One-Piece vs Two-Piece Toilets

One-piece vs two-piece toilets

You're replacing a toilet and the showroom has two columns: sleek one-piece models on one side and traditional two-piece models on the other. The one-pieces cost double. Are they actually worth it?

Here's how a working Scottsdale plumber answers that question.

What's actually different

  • Two-piece: The tank and bowl are separate, bolted together with a rubber gasket and two tank bolts.
  • One-piece: The tank and bowl are molded as a single piece of porcelain — no seam, no exposed bolts.

That one structural choice drives every other difference.

Cleaning

One-piece wins, clearly. There's no tank-to-bowl gasket to catch dust, no bolt caps to scrub around, no crevice where Scottsdale's hard water leaves limescale rings. If you've ever battled the gap under a two-piece tank, you know.

Height and footprint

One-piece toilets are typically 2–4 inches shorter overall and sit closer to the wall. In tight Scottsdale half-baths and powder rooms, that visual openness matters. Two-piece toilets are usually taller, which can actually be a benefit if you want comfort-height seating.

Performance

Flush performance is about the trapway design and flush valve size, not the number of pieces. A well-designed two-piece (TOTO Drake, Kohler Cimarron) flushes just as powerfully as a one-piece. Don't pay extra for one-piece thinking you'll get a better flush.

Durability

One-piece wins long-term — there's no tank-to-bowl gasket to fail, and no tank bolts to corrode and leak. In Scottsdale's hard water, two-piece tank gaskets typically need replacement around year 10–15. One-piece toilets routinely last 25+ years with no leaks.

Installation

Two-piece is easier and cheaper to install — and easier to carry up stairs. A one-piece toilet is heavy (often 100+ lbs) and awkward for one person. If you're installing yourself, that matters.

Repair and parts

Two-piece wins. If the tank cracks or the trapway fails, you can replace just the broken half. With a one-piece, a crack means a new toilet.

Cost

  • Two-piece quality models: $200–$500 (TOTO Drake, Kohler Cimarron, American Standard Champion)
  • One-piece quality models: $450–$1,200+ (TOTO Aquia, Kohler San Souci, TOTO Carlyle II)

Resale value

In Scottsdale's mid-to-upper market, one-piece toilets in primary and guest baths are increasingly an expectation. Two-piece is still totally acceptable in secondary baths.

Our Scottsdale recommendation

  • Primary or guest bath, modern remodel: One-piece (TOTO Aquia or Carlyle II)
  • Secondary bath, kids' bath, rental: Quality two-piece (TOTO Drake)
  • Tight half-bath: One-piece for the visual openness
  • Comfort-height needs: Either, but specify "ADA" or "comfort height"
