# Why Does My Toilet Keep Clogging? Repair or Replace

September 6, 2026 9 min read

**Short answer: a toilet that keeps clogging is almost never a fluke. In Scottsdale homes the repeat causes are a weak first-generation 1.6 GPF flush, mineral scale closing off the rim jets, a partially blocked branch line, a bad vent, or a hairline crack in the internal trapway. Fixing the cause runs $95–$450; when the trapway or the toilet's flush design is the problem, replacement at $550–$1,200 installed is the cheaper answer over five years.**

Written by Casey Dominick, licensed Arizona plumber (ROC #350819). Dominick Plumbing diagnoses and replaces toilets across Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek, Fountain Hills, Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa. Call **(623) 323-4538** for a flat-rate written quote.

This guide is about a toilet that clogs **again and again**. If yours runs constantly instead, read [why your toilet keeps running](/toilet-keeps-running-causes-fixes-scottsdale). If several fixtures back up at once, it is not the toilet at all — see [main sewer line clog warning signs](/main-sewer-line-clog-warning-signs-scottsdale).

## First: is it the toilet, or the line it drains into?

Run this test before spending a dollar.

- **Only this toilet backs up, other fixtures are fine** → the toilet or its short branch line.
- **Toilet backs up and the nearby tub or shower gurgles or fills** → the branch or main is restricted, not the bowl.
- **Every toilet in the house is slow** → main line. Stop here and get a camera inspection.
- **It clogs after long non-use, then behaves** → likely evaporation and scale in the rim jets.

That single distinction decides whether you are buying a $95 auger visit or a $6,000 sewer repair, and it takes five minutes.

## The five real causes of a repeat-clogging toilet

### 1\. A weak-flushing first-generation low-flow toilet

Federal law dropped toilets to 1.6 gallons per flush in 1994, and the models built between roughly 1994 and 2003 were 3.5-gallon bowls with a smaller tank bolted on. They did not move waste far enough down the line. If your toilet is from that era and has always needed two flushes, nothing is broken — it was designed badly. Modern 1.28 GPF toilets with a 3-inch flush valve and a glazed trapway outperform them dramatically. No repair fixes this one.

### 2\. Mineral scale in the rim jets and siphon jet

This is the Scottsdale-specific cause. Valley water runs **17–22 grains per gallon**, and every flush leaves calcium behind on the underside of the rim where the water exits. Over eight to ten years those small holes close down, the bowl fills with a lazy swirl instead of a hard rinse, and the siphon never fully starts. The bowl looks clean. The jets are choked.

Test: drop a mirror under the rim, or pour a bucket of water fast into the bowl. If a bucket flushes it cleanly but the tank flush does not, your jets are the problem, not your drain.

### 3\. A partially blocked branch line

A 3-inch toilet branch that has collected wipes, dental floss, or a lodged object will pass water and fail solids. This is the classic "flushable" wipe outcome — they do not break down, they hang on a joint and catch everything behind them. Cabling clears it; a camera confirms whether something structural is holding it.

### 4\. A blocked or missing vent

A toilet needs air behind the water. If the vent stack is blocked — bird nest, debris, or a roof repair that capped it — the flush pulls a vacuum and stops halfway. Symptom: a gurgle, a slow glug, and clogs that come and go with no pattern.

### 5\. A cracked or scaled internal trapway

The trapway is the S-shaped passage cast inside the china. If it has scaled up or has a hairline crack, the toilet will clog forever and nothing you can reach will fix it. This is a replacement, not a repair.

## Things people blame that are usually not the cause

- **The wax ring.** A failed wax ring leaks at the floor; it does not cause clogs.
- **Toilet paper brand.** Ordinary paper does not clog a healthy toilet. If yours can't handle it, the toilet is the problem.
- **The fill valve.** It affects tank refill, not flush power — unless the water level is set below the fill line, which is worth checking first and free to fix.
- **Chemical drain cleaners.** They do not clear toilet clogs, they damage the china glaze and gaskets, and they make the next professional visit worse.

## Repair or replace? The honest rule

**Repair** when the toilet is under about 10 years old, flushes well when it is working, and the cause is a jet, a flapper, a vent, or a one-time object.

**Replace** when any of these are true:

- The toilet is a 1994–2003 low-flow model that has never flushed well.
- You have descaled the jets and it still needs two flushes.
- The trapway is cracked or scaled.
- You are already spending $400+ on repairs to a 20-year-old fixture.
- The bowl rocks, the flange is failing, and the china is dated anyway.

The math is simple. Two service calls in a year on an old toilet costs more than a new one installed, and the new one uses 1.28 gallons instead of 3.5 — real money on a Phoenix-area water bill.

## What to buy if you're replacing

Look for a **3-inch flush valve**, a **fully glazed trapway**, and a **MaP score of 800 grams or higher**. That combination, not the brand name, is what makes a toilet stop clogging. Comfort-height (chair-height) bowls are easier on knees and hips and are what most Scottsdale homeowners choose — see [comfort-height toilet upgrades](/comfort-height-toilet-upgrade-scottsdale). If you are weighing form factors, read [one-piece vs two-piece toilets](/one-piece-vs-two-piece-toilet-scottsdale).

We install customer-supplied toilets from Home Depot, Lowe's, Costco, or anywhere else — no brand markup.

## How to keep it from coming back

- Flush only waste and toilet paper. **No wipes, ever**, including the ones labeled flushable.
- If your home is on untreated Valley water, a softener slows jet scaling across every fixture. See [water softener installation](/services/water-softeners).
- Descale the rim jets every few years in hard-water homes.
- Do not use in-tank bleach tablets — they destroy flappers and seals.
- Keep a flange plunger (the one with the extended sleeve) rather than a flat cup plunger.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my toilet clog every week?** Weekly clogging is almost always either a weak 1990s low-flow toilet, scaled rim jets in a hard-water home, or a partially blocked branch line. A five-minute test — bucket flush versus tank flush — separates the toilet from the drain.

**Can hard water make a toilet clog?** Yes, indirectly. Scottsdale water at 17–22 grains per gallon deposits calcium in the rim jets and siphon jet, weakening the flush until solids no longer clear the trapway. Descaling restores it; on older toilets, replacement is usually the better value.

**Is it worth repairing an old toilet that keeps clogging?** If it is under about 10 years old and the cause is a flapper, a jet, or a vent, yes. If it is a 1994–2003 low-flow model or the trapway is cracked, no — you will keep paying for service calls on a fixture that was never going to work.

**Will a plunger fix a repeat clog?** A flange plunger clears the immediate blockage but does nothing about the cause. If you are plunging more than a couple of times a year, something upstream or inside the toilet needs attention.

**How long does a toilet replacement take?** About 1–2 hours per toilet, plus 30–45 minutes if the closet flange needs repair. We haul the old toilet away at no charge.

Repeat clogs are a symptom, not the disease. Call **(623) 323-4538** and we will tell you which of the five causes you have — and whether repairing it is worth your money.
