May 25, 2026 4 min read ## Are touchless kitchen faucets actually worth it? A touchless faucet costs roughly **double** a comparable manual faucet. After installing hundreds of them across Scottsdale, here's our honest, no-marketing take on who should get one — and who shouldn't bother. ## How touchless actually works A small **infrared sensor** in the base of the spout (and sometimes a second one in the goose-neck) detects motion within about 3 inches. Wave or place a hand under the spout and it runs at the temperature your manual handle is set to. Wave again to stop. Most models still have a **manual handle** for temperature and override — touchless doesn't replace it. ## Power source matters - **Battery (6 AA or 1 C cell)**: easiest install, batteries last 1–2 years. Best for retrofits. - **AC transformer (plugs into outlet under sink)**: no battery changes ever. Requires an outlet under the sink. - **Hardwired**: rare on residential. No more elbow-handle gymnastics. - **Households with kids learning to wash hands**: a wave is easier than a lever. - **Anyone with arthritis or hand-strength limitations**: huge ergonomic win. - **High-end remodels**: it's now an expected feature in $750K+ Scottsdale homes. ## When to skip it - **Tight budget**: a $250 manual Moen does the same daily job as a $500 touchless. - **Households with pets that jump on the counter**: yes, this triggers the sensor. - **Heavy entertaining at the sink**: the auto-shutoff can interrupt rinsing produce. - **Hard-water-only kitchens with no softener**: mineral buildup on the sensor lens reduces reliability faster. ## Reliability — the honest version With quality brands (**Moen MotionSense Wave, Delta Touch2O, Kohler Sensate**), the sensors hold up for 8–10 years in Scottsdale homes with a water softener. Without a softener, expect to clean the sensor area more often and possibly see reduced sensitivity after year 5. No-name Amazon touchless faucets fail constantly. We've replaced them at the 12-month mark more times than we can count.
